1st Annual Virgin Island Billfish Tournament for Haiti

7th Annual Virgin Island Billfish Tournament for Haiti

Architecture Department to ensure quality design. For the past six years, monies raised in the tournament helped the rebuilding.  We are now focusing on providing the best possible education, to students who will become the future hope of Haiti.  Last year, we helped improve and expand the literacy programs, and construct a new section of classrooms at the school.  Due to the new and repaired facilities, continued academic performance of the school, and recent investments in technology, health services, and other areas, there continues to be a great demand for admission to the school.  The leadership hopes to grow enrollment to further serve the local needy communities, where education is a beacon for a better future, for the children and all of Haiti.

Here in the United States Virgin Islands, like many Caribbean communities, our public schools serve a diverse population of students who deserve the opportunity to excel. During discussions with the principal of BCB, Mr. Carver Farrow, he expressed that because of funding priorities, one of the most successful academic programs at BCB will not have funding for the 2018-2019 school year.  This is where we want to step in and help local children also reach their potential. The program needed is a Remedial Reading Program with a reading component for English as a Second Language. Many students using this program had struggled in previous years, but after working with the systems, were among the honor students at promotional exercises.

The 8th Annual Virgin Island Billfish Tournament will be held on August 25-26, 2018, at American Yacht Harbor in St. Thomas, Virgin Islands. The Captains’ Meeting for the tournament will be on August 24, 2018.  This year’s tournament will see a few changes. As you may know, the Caribbean was devastated last fall by an unprecedented two category 5 hurricanes within a two-week period.  St. Thomas, our home island, was hit particularly hard. Therefore, this year’s tournament will be expanded to benefit the Bertha C. Boschulte Middle School (BCB) in St. Thomas, Virgin Islands as well as our inaugural beneficiary, the Ensemble Scolaire Pere Basile Moreau School in Port-au-Prince, Haiti.  Another change we would like to highlight is that the tournament’s first day of competition will coincide with the 2018 Atlantic Blue Marlin Tournament being held on August 23-25, 2018.  As a result, billfish caught on August 25, 2018, will count in both tournaments.

Due to the generosity of anglers and donors in the past, Pere Basile Moreau has been rebuilt and expanded in coordination with the University of Notre Dame
